Why Your Dryer Is Not Heating (And How to Fix It)

Is your dryer running but not producing heat? Here are the most common causes and what you can do about it — from simple DIY checks to when to call a technician.

A dryer that tumbles but produces no heat is one of the most common appliance complaints we hear from Sacramento homeowners. The good news: most causes are fixable, and some you can even check yourself before calling a technician.

1. Clogged Lint Trap or Exhaust Vent

This is the first thing to check. A severely clogged vent restricts airflow and causes the dryer's thermal fuse to trip as a safety measure — cutting off heat.

What to do: Clean the lint trap after every load. Once a year, disconnect the exhaust duct and clean it out completely.

2. Blown Thermal Fuse

The thermal fuse is a one-time safety device. Once it blows (usually due to overheating from a clogged vent), the dryer will run but not heat. It cannot reset itself — it must be replaced.

What to do: A technician can test the fuse with a multimeter and replace it if needed. It's a relatively inexpensive part.

3. Faulty Heating Element (Electric Dryers)

In electric dryers, the heating element is a coiled wire that heats up to warm the air. Over time, the element can burn out.

Signs: The dryer runs fine, blows air, but the air stays cold.

What to do: Replacement requires disassembling the dryer. We recommend calling a professional to avoid damage.

4. Bad Igniter or Gas Valve (Gas Dryers)

For gas dryers, the igniter lights the gas to produce heat. If the igniter fails, there's no flame — no heat.

Signs: You might hear the gas valve click but the burner doesn't light.

What to do: This is a job for a certified technician, as it involves gas components.

5. Tripped Circuit Breaker

Electric dryers use two 120V circuits (totaling 240V). If one leg trips, the motor runs (so the drum spins) but the heating element gets no power.

What to do: Check your electrical panel for a tripped breaker. Reset it. If it trips again, call an electrician.

When to Call a Professional

If you've cleaned the vent and the problem persists, it's time to call a pro. Diagnosing and replacing internal components like heating elements, thermal fuses, and igniters requires the right tools and experience.
